Wēkui Bug on Mauna Kea
Artist: Rena Ekmanis
Dimensions (inches): frame size is: 18" x 17"
The Wēkiu Bug is named after Pu‘u Wēkiu, a cinder cone at the summit of Mauna Kea. They are endemic to Hawai‘i and live only on 3 cinder cones on the top of Mauna Kea. The bug survives by sucking out the juices of insects that get blown onto the summit of Mauna Kea. An antifreeze in their blood helps the Wēkiu survive in sub freezing temperatures. The insect is only 1/4 inch long and is the highest elevation insect found in Hawai‘i.
