Artist: Lisa Greig
Medium: Hand Painted Linoleum block print
Dimensions: H = 20in x W = 17.5 in x D= 1in
Artist Statement: Ohia is considered the mother of the Hawaiian forest, half of the native trees on the Big Island are ohia. Native birds live in them & feed on them. Ohia with its dense canopy provides an umbrella that gathers water from passing clouds & delivers it into the ground. This watershed feeds our streams & underground aquifers. It is also the first tree to appear on new lava flows, helping to create livable habitats for other species. It carries immense significance in Hawaiian culture. The tree of life springs from the womb of nature - represented here by the Koru - the Polynesian symbol of new life, strength & peace. It forms the shell of a turtle, one of the oldest symbols for mother earth. The sun is rising, it's a brand new day filled with new beginnings & new positive opportunities. All we have comes from the earth & we must take good care of the earth. We must protect our forests from rapid ohia death. The loss of Ohia would not only affect our native forests but also Hawaiian tradition & storytelling.
Many Blessings & Aloha Lisa Greig
