The Hawaiian monk seal, found only in the Hawaiian archipelago, is critically endangered. The population has declined an average of 3% per year over the last ten years. With only 1100 surviving, it faces a real danger of extinction. It is Hawai‘i‘s state mammal, yet the state of Hawai‘i commits almost no resources to its protection. It is the most endangered marine mammal under U.S. jurisdiction, and the only marine mammal entirely under U.S. jurisdiction, yet the U.S. annually funds recovery efforts at half the level needed for recovery, according to its own recovery team. Without an increased commitment from both state and federal governments, and most importantly from the people of Hawai‘i, this rare animal, the only tropical seal surviving on the planet, is likely to go extinct in our lifetimes.
