Pueo is the Hawaiian word for owl. Pueos are endemic to Hawaii, and have become an endangered species. Light pollution is the main cause of the pueo's endangerment, because the pueos have an extreme sensitivity to light at night. In Hawaiian legends, the pueo is regarded as the protected of Hawaii's people and animals. In one legend, a man took pueo eggs from a nest. Felling sorry, the man returned the eggs and and built a temple to for the pueo who he now thought of as a god. Thinking of this as an act of rebellion against the current gods, the chief ordered the man to be executed. Right before he was to be killed, it is said that hundreds of owls flew over the area, darkening the sky with their wings. The soldiers were blinded in the darkness, preventing the execution and allowing the man to escape. This piece is meant to convey the fact that the mighty pueo, with it's wings outstretched, is ready to protected the endangered plants and people of Hawaii.

Pueo (Hawaiian short-eared owl) Asio flammeus sandwichensis,
